Hitch Carriers FAQ

General Compatibility & Installation

Q: What vehicles are compatible with the hitch cargo carrier?
A: The cargo carrier fits vehicles with a 2" hitch receiver. Always verify that your vehicle’s hitch class and weight capacity support the carrier.

Q: Can the cargo carrier be used with a hitch extender?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch extender is rated for the appropriate weight capacity and does not compromise stability.

Q: Is this hitch carrier approved for use on a 5th wheel?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch receiver meets the required weight capacity. Always double-check your vehicle’s specifications.

Q: Can the hitch carrier be attached to a tow ball?
A: No, it is not designed for tow ball use. It must be connected to a hitch receiver.

Safety & Security

Q: How does the hitch stabilizer & lock system enhance safety?
A: The hitch stabilizer minimizes wobbling and movement, while the hitch lock prevents theft by securing the carrier to the vehicle.

Q: Will dual exhaust pose a fire hazard?
A: The heavy-duty steel withstands high temperatures, but it is recommended to maintain a safe distance from the exhaust to prevent heat exposure.

Q: Does the cargo carrier block the rearview camera?
A: It may partially obstruct visibility depending on your vehicle and the cargo being carried. Always check after installation and adjust if needed.

Q: What is the maximum recommended height for stacking cargo?
A: If stacking above the side rails, use a cargo net or tie-down straps to keep items secure during travel.

Durability & Maintenance

Q: Is the cargo carrier rust-proof?
A: The carrier is made of anti-rust steel with a protective coating. For extended durability, periodically apply a rust-resistant spray and store it indoors when not in use.

Q: Is the carrier weather-resistant?

Cargo Bag Features & Security

Q: How can I keep my belongings safe and dry in the cargo bag?
A: The waterproof cargo bag has carry handles, zipper pulls, a protective zipper flap, Velcro closures, and buckle straps. It also includes an anti-theft lock for added security.

I ordered this cargo carrier with my RV in mind. I always have items that are dirty that I would rather keep on the outside of my RV and this is the perfect place to keep them. Now my outdoor rug that's still wet from the rain can go in this carrier along with gas cans, various hoses, etc. The included bag is weather resistant, though not waterproof, but that's fine for my purposes. It keeps whatever hoses and such looking neat and tidy during travel and at my campsite. The carrier is easy to install as it is mostly preassembled and only requires a few minutes to finish assembly. 45 ft.³ is quite a lot of extra room for storage using the bag and it can carry even more without the bag with various things lashed on. It's very sturdy and can fold up as well. Overall, it's a very nice hitch cargo carrier and I'm glad I ordered it.

Nice rack but with a couple of design flaws. 1. The lights need to fit tighter. They are easily popped out when you fill the bag or while driving.2. The wires can't be run through the support bar if you want to tilt the tray up at anytime. The wire are severely pinched when you do this.3. The tray sits very high. It wouldn't be much easier to load if the hinges on the rear side were mounted to let it swing all the way down. It stops at about a 45° angle it's difficult to work around.4. The plug wiring is the last step in the instructions. It stated that you are to push the wiring harness into the pipe and place the cap over it. We'll, you can't do that with the installation bolt that holds the bar to the tray in place. Not even close. The photo on the instructions doesn't show a bolt in place but installing that bolt is the very first step in the assembly process.5. I'm also having issues with the lights not turning off when the vehicle is off. I'm not sure if that's a wiring issue or a setting on my vehicle. The lights otherwise work correctly. I have to unplug it every time I park the vehicle and plug the lights in before I leave again. I'll dig into it when I have time. All in all, it's a really nice kit. It's very heavy so it will take two people to install/ remove it. If the above items were addressed, I'd give it 5 stars

We've been fans of Mockins brand products for years based on our experience with them being sturdy, durrable and long-lasting. Ths 66X30" with 14" roundabout railing is no exception. The product is well-designed and made of quality, durable steel. The hitch is easy to install if you're familiar with hitch hookups. It's a good size, as you get a lot of cargo space and it comes with its own strong, weatherproof covering! The metal is said to be rust resistant, and as with our other Mockins items, we've never had an issue with rust. Yes, there will be some noise from the wind hitting the carrier and/or the carrier cover. However, the noise level is not excessive and is to be exected. Great value for all that comes included.

I Felt compelled to share a review after extensive research for a cargo carrier and to share what I wish someone shared during my research. Absolutely solid, yes it's heavy (it's needed to support the load weight stated - I'm glad it's heavy). I love the 2" solid steel hitch post as key to the stability. Installation no issues as was patient & studied the instructions. Awesome all the included items and great Price - bag (fantastic and can hold a lot), straps, cargo net, lock, trailer hitch lock, plate holder, anti-wobble plate and the lights (note that the lights are not running lights so only "light" on turn signal and braking). The fold up is so handy when not in use. The "High Rail" adds stability to contribute to carrier balancing.Key Info to Know, The lock washers and nuts provided to attach the 2" solid steel hitch to the basket (2 total) are not very good. Same for the lock washer and nuts on the anti-wobble plate. Being that you have to assemble the cargo carrier, natural "weak points" will exist so you need premium bolts, lock washers and anti-slip nuts. Let me explain, due to vibration from driving, potholes, & natural turning force, the lock washers go flat as they are too thin and have no"spring" to ensure tension exists. The nuts can vibrate loose (sure Loc-Tite could be an option but I would upgrade the hardware). When this vibration and loosen happens, when you turn or change lanes the moving force will cause the "see saw" effect and not stay level & not move.Pictures below show my haul, close to 500 LB's - drove over 1200 miles - no issue of bending on the 2" solid steel hitch, you'll see the hardware and understand - why you should upgrade. Once I upgraded to galvanized lock nuts and anti-slip nuts - absolutely no "back off" which means the carrier stays in balance (Important to note be sure you balance the weight as evenly as possible as this step is pivotal).Would definitely buy again and excited to have this for years to come for those exciting.

This cargo carrier appears to be exceptionally well-constructed. The assembly process took me approximately thirty minutes. It possesses a noticeable weight, and the metal frame feels quite sturdy. This cargo carrier offers a considerable amount of additional cargo space. Furthermore, the carrier can be folded easily when not in use. The price seems reasonable for a carrier of this quality.

Almost perfectly made. This is a tank. Plenty of space. It is quite heavy, so expect help. The bag and other items are also high quality. This is an easy 5 stars. Great all in one package.

Took this to Orlando and back with a camping detour. Mounting was easy: slide into the receiver, tighten the anti-wobble, lock it, plug in the lights. The rails + bag swallowed two suitcases, a tent, sleeping bags, and a cooler. Buckle straps, ratchets, and the cargo net kept everything tight no sway. We hit a classic Florida downpour and the bag stayed bone-dry. Rear signal lights and plate bracket kept us legal and visible. Folds up against the bumper when empty, which is handy at trailheads. After using it for a few weeks: no sag, no rust, zippers still looks new. Definite recommend from me!

This Mockins XL hitch carrier is a powerhouse. The frame (66×30×14 in) is massive, letting you haul large gear, suitcases, or camping stuff with ease, and with a 500-lb load rating, you get serious hauling capacity. The set comes with a 45 cu ft waterproof cargo bag (66×30×40 in) that has reinforced seams, waterproof zippers, and protective flaps, which helps keep gear protected in rain or rough weather. Side safety features (rear signal lights, license plate bracket) are smart touches, especially when you're carrying a load that blocks factory lights or plates. It also includes straps, a cargo net, hitch stabilizer, lock, etc., so you've got most of what you need in one package. What to watch out for / Downsides:Because this thing is big, setup and handling take work. When folded up the carrier is heavy (~95 lbs per spec), bulky, and awkward to lift; loading it, hitching it up, or mounting it on/off needs planning or help. The large size also increases drag and can affect your vehicle's fuel efficiency and handling especially at highway speeds, and wind resistance becomes noticeable when the cargo bag is full. Waterproof bag protects a lot, but water can still sneak in via zippers or flaps if not closed perfectly, or during heavy downpours / splashes. Mounting to a 2-³ receiver works, but you'll want a hitch lock + stabilizer to reduce wobble, rattling, or shaking with heavy loads. Lastly, visibility: when loaded, the carrier + bag can hide your tail lights/license plate, so the included lighting/license plate bracket is essential not optional.Bottom line:If you need to haul big gear, camping, trips, traveling, the Mockins XL gives you serious capacity and a well-thought bundle. It won't be light or effortless, but if you plan ahead (load, drive, attach, protect), it delivers excellent utility and value.

I have a couple items form Mockins and I like their products and their customer service, you cant really go wrong with them. This Cargo Carrier is perfect for an overland trip or if you have a camper van, skoolie or some other RV and want to haul extra gear temporarily or permanently. The carrier itself is heavy and robust. It appears very well built and has been able to handle 400lbs or so of gear, mainly water and Gas without any sagging or other issues. If you need a well priced cargo carrier at a good price, you came to the right place.Until We Meet Again-Off The Grid Ken

Sagged down and was dragging on the road way at times. Was never ever overloaded. It only ever had a 53# kids electric vehicle on it.

The Mockins XL cargo carrier is perfect for extra storage on road trips. It folds easily when not in use and holds up to 500 lbs, which is great for heavy luggage or gear. The included 45 cu.ft. cargo bag fits well and keeps everything secure. Love the added rear signal lights and license plate holder - great safety features. Fits perfectly on my SUV and truck!!!

This is the "Mac Daddy- of Hitch Carriers. The only thing that would make this better would be if it was made of Aluminum. It is very large and designed to carrier a lot of weight. I love that it has the 14- side walls. The rear wall it designed to be able to swing down and open up. The side walls give you a lot of assistance in keeping everything secure. Most hitch carriers do not have that large of side walls. If they have any at all most only really go to 6- which is pretty common. The brake lights make it so that if you are covering your taillights police cannot pull you over. You do have to have the 4-pin wiring for them to work, but if you have a hitch receiver most likely you have the wiring. The waterproof bag is very large and very thick. It is without a doubt waterproof. The stitching is done well. The carrier itself is very heavy and for some you might need help putting it in your hitch receiver, but once it is on you are good to go. When not in use you can put it in the upright position which makes parking a lot easier. Overall, it's a great carrier.

I recently drove from WA to NY with a Mockins hitch carrier that is significantly smaller than this. It functioned very nicely on the trip, but I wish I had this one for extended cargo capacity. This carrier is twice the weight of the other one and it supports a larger payload. The steel on this is more than sturdy enough for its intended use. If you mount the unit to your hitch properly you'll have no issues with sagging. The sidebars provide extra reinforcement for your cargo bag. Straps and tie-downs are solid, as with my other unit. This is just bigger and stronger.

I used this carrier for a weekend move. We strapped down our suitcases and stroller, then drove for several hours in light rain. The waterproof bag kept everything dry, and the rails stopped things from sliding around. It was heavy to mount, but worth the extra storage.-¢ 500lb capacity handled heavy boxes without bending-¢ Bag is waterproof and shields cargo from dirt-¢ Folding design works smoothly afterthe first setup-¢ Adds significant storage for trips and moves-¢ Large-sized blocksprovide rear access when installed

I picked this up for some extra storage capacity on trips. This thing is solid. It also folds up when not using. I found it took me around an hour to set it up. The directions were easy to follow overall. The one thing I was concerned about and took off a star for is the turn signal cable. It has you routing it inside and I found it can get crimped when folding the unit up.Overall this is a solid choice and you can store quite a lot and keep it dry with the included bag. I also like you can use it without the bag as well. I can easily recommend this for sure. It was well designed and functions nicely.

"This review is for Mockins XL 66""x30""x14"" High Rail Folding Hitch Cargo Carrier w/ 45 CuFt Trailer Hitch Cargo Carrier Bag | 500Lbs Cap Luggage Rack for SUV Car & Truck w/Rear Signal Lights, License Plate Holder & MoreThis is a great little hitch trailer. We currently have one that we use to take our trash back and forth to the dump, but it's nice to have this one on the side for whenever we want to pick up something bigger (like a chest freezer) that just doesn't fit into our car. It's fairly easy to set up (we didn't go through the extra optional step to install lights or anything). It feels like high-quality, and you get what you pay for here. Definitely recommendNOTE: As an Amazon Vine reviewer, I receive this product without paying for it directly; however, I have to claim the full value of this product on my taxes as this counts as a taxable gift and I must pay taxes for the taxable value of this item."

Overall this is a really nice cargo carrier that really expands the cargo carrying capabilities of your vehicle. It's not for everyone - as it's very large and very heavy, meaning it can be a bit much to attach, but if you have a need to carry a lot of cargo behind your car, this is a great option! The carrier comes in a box that is, you guessed it, large and heavy (about 95lbs apparently) so plan accordingly. The good thing is that the primary platform is fully assembled (you just fold up the sides). You do have to attach the bar that goes into the tow hitch and braces for that, and if you want to wire in the lights / attach the license plate bracket, that all is "some assembly required" but it's not too hard and I was up and running quickly. The carrier attached fairly easily to the 2" hitch mount and 4 pin electrical connection on my car and I was ready to go (of course you want to remember to use a locking hitch pin). I like tha the carrier comes with both a bag and mesh grid depending on what you want to use in the carrier (the bag is weather resistant, not waterproof, but it will help keep things protected. Note that because this is an open carrier, items held on it are subject to being taken if you say leave them there in a parking lot. With an apppropriate tow vehicle, you won't even notice that it's there (well, until you back up that is) - there's perhaps a touch more wind noise, but nothing that is very noticeable and particularly for the added cargo capacity and functionality that you get. I did have to turn off the reverse collision sensors on my car as the car thought the cargo carrier was an obstruction and applied the emergency / collision avoidance braking. The whole package seems to be well-built and like it will last a VERY long time, both the primary carrier and the bag / accessories that come with it.So if you'd like to add a bit more cargo capacity (or a lot more) to your vehicle, this is a solid way to do just that. Give it a try today!

This thing has been a game-changer for family road trips. We used to struggle to fit everything in the back of the SUV, but now we have so much extra space. It was easy to put together and attach to the hitch. The tall rails are great for keeping everything secure, and the included cargo bag is huge and keeps our stuff dry. I also appreciate the extra safety features like the rear lights and license plate holder. It folds up nicely when we're not using it.

The included large 45-cubic-foot cargo bag easily accommodated our entire family's luggage, tent, folding chairs, grill, and other camping gear. No longer cluttering the interior, the entire trunk is free, which significantly improved the riding experience. The 500-pound load capacity gives me peace of mind. The sturdy steel structure provides a secure fit when mounted on the SUV's rear hitch, even at high speeds. The carrier's built-in high-rail design, combined with the straps, secures large items securely, ensuring they don't fall during sudden braking or turns.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this setup. The carrier itself arrives mostly assembled, which o greatly appreciate. The only issue I had in assembly is that the main hitch tube was too small to go into the hitch tube of the carrier. Runner hammer got it in, but not without taking off the finish. This finish helps protect it from the elements, and ultimately, from rust. And since this is right at the main pivot point of the setup, rust would be an issue. That's my only knock though. The carrier and all of its accessories seem above average quality. For the weight limit stated, I would have liked to see the brackets with welds across the entire length, and not just the ends. But it should be sufficient to hold this weight. We will see, as I plan to test it on my tractor around our place first. I'm glad to recommend this hitch hauling setup.
