FAQ

Hitch Carriers FAQ

General Compatibility & Installation

Q: What vehicles are compatible with the hitch cargo carrier?
A: The cargo carrier fits vehicles with a 2" hitch receiver. Always verify that your vehicle’s hitch class and weight capacity support the carrier.

Q: Can the cargo carrier be used with a hitch extender?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch extender is rated for the appropriate weight capacity and does not compromise stability.

Q: Is this hitch carrier approved for use on a 5th wheel?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch receiver meets the required weight capacity. Always double-check your vehicle’s specifications.

Q: Can the hitch carrier be attached to a tow ball?
A: No, it is not designed for tow ball use. It must be connected to a hitch receiver.

Safety & Security

Q: How does the hitch stabilizer & lock system enhance safety?
A: The hitch stabilizer minimizes wobbling and movement, while the hitch lock prevents theft by securing the carrier to the vehicle.

Q: Will dual exhaust pose a fire hazard?
A: The heavy-duty steel withstands high temperatures, but it is recommended to maintain a safe distance from the exhaust to prevent heat exposure.

Q: Does the cargo carrier block the rearview camera?
A: It may partially obstruct visibility depending on your vehicle and the cargo being carried. Always check after installation and adjust if needed.

Q: What is the maximum recommended height for stacking cargo?
A: If stacking above the side rails, use a cargo net or tie-down straps to keep items secure during travel.

Durability & Maintenance

Q: Is the cargo carrier rust-proof?
A: The carrier is made of anti-rust steel with a protective coating. For extended durability, periodically apply a rust-resistant spray and store it indoors when not in use.

Q: Is the carrier weather-resistant?
A: Yes, it has a rust-resistant coating to protect against harsh weather conditions.

Storage & Usage

Q: How do I fold the cargo carrier for storage?
A: The carrier features a tilting design for compact storage. Follow the user manual for folding instructions.

Q: Can the cargo bag be used on a roof rack?
A: No, the cargo bag is not designed for roof use. High wind speeds and improper installation could cause damage, and roof mounting is not covered under warranty.

Cargo Bag Features & Security

Q: How can I keep my belongings safe and dry in the cargo bag?
A: The waterproof cargo bag has carry handles, zipper pulls, a protective zipper flap, Velcro closures, and buckle straps. It also includes an anti-theft lock for added security.

Q: Does the hitch cargo carrier extend for additional storage?
A: The carrier itself does not extend, but the waterproof cargo bag is flexible and can expand to fit different cargo sizes.

47 year old female here. I ordered this at the end of an extended vacation where I somehow had double the stuff of when I left for the trip. It was going to be a long drive (12+ hours), so I didn't want to be crammed in the car. My brother flew down to help me drive. He put it together for me and was VERY impressed, which made me happy since I still seek the approval of my older brother even at this age. 😂It was easier for two of us to lift it into the hitch, but once it was in, I was able to adjust it while he looked for the right spot to put the pin in it. There is an anti-rattle item included, too. I have to say, we never heard anything from the back (to the extent of me wondering if we lost all the luggage). We will definitely be using this for future vacations. If you're on the fence, get this!!!

We tested the heck out of it, we drove from Denver to Nevada to California and back, covering over 3600 miles. We camped at some places that involved some mild off roading. We suffered a puncture (unrelated to the hitch!). This thing held up to it all. We loaded up with all the heavy & bulky stuff and I feel like we could have added more! I did add a trailer safety chain and lights. Long story short. Loved it. Recommended it to everyone lol.

Drove almost 600 miles one way 1200 in total driving back home and the drive was smooth no complaints giving it four stars because when i got home and tried to pull the bag out the handle brokeAlso had to upgrade the washer and the locking washer of the hitch stabilizer for a heavy duty one from tractor supply cost Me less than a dollar for two sets to have spares

We love this! So easy to assemble and attach! The dry bag weathered Hurricane Debby with everything dry inside! No wobble at all. Would recommend 5/5!!

I don't often write reviews, but I would say this is the best hitch carrier that I noticed when traveling this weekend it assembled very easy attached smoothly, professional bag waterproof to the max follow the instructions seal it up correctly. It also fits back in the bag, balancing U joint help me travel at 80 mph easily with no rattles, the orange tie straps was wonderful and it also provided a safety visualization for cars behind me in the bad weather. I rate this product at 10 absolutely all the way around.

I used this carrier to transport luggage to and from an airport that I could not fit inside my Honda Pilot. I was skeptical based on the mixed reviews. However it worked out extremely well for us. I drove with it loaded a total of approximately 160 miles. There were zero concerns about the stability of the carrier or cargo. The only problem I experienced with this was inserting the locking bolt when the carrier is empty and in the upright position. Aligning the holes is extremely difficult, requiring some lifting while aligning and inserting the bolt. It was raining on the journey to the airport, and the waterproof bag was truly waterproof. No signs of wear from the initial use.

We needed a more storage space for a trip in our 2010 Honda odyssey (that already had a trailer hitch and trailer light kit). Unlike a roof rack, there was no extra wind resistance. Pretty easy assembly and attachment to the hitch but give yourself some time to get familiar. I added brake / turn signal lights "CURT 53201 Auxiliary Automotive LED Light Strips for Hitch Cargo Carrier, Bike Rack, 2-Pack, red- that hooked in easily to my existing electrical trailer brake light hook up to give me a little more piece of mind. Some extra info that I wanted to know beforehand but could not find out in reviews: on our odyssey you cannot open the rear hatch when the rack is in -˜stowed' position, but we could open it when in deployed position and with luggage, thought we didn't pack it max full; the lowest point was the bolts from the stabilizer (circled in red in one of my photos) and they were what scraped on an extreme driveway entrance since the odyssey hitch is pretty low, also we only packed plastic bins full of the bulky but not the heaviest items in the storage bag and didn't experience any rain, but overall were very happy with the quality. The bag, straps, and net did a great job of securing the load (sorry no photo of it all together)Overall would recommend.

Bought this hitch basket a few months ago, and wanted to give it a few uses before writing a review. It has been working great for us! Used it on a 2,000+ mile cross country road trip through 80mph freeways, mountain roads, dirt roads, poorly paved roads, you name it, and we never had any issues. It held all of our gear inside the canvas bag through rain, heat and even snow! We have since used it for camping trips and general cargo transport, and it is still holding up great! As you can see in the photos, the velcro on the bag is coming detached. It has already detached in multiple places. This does not affect the functionality of the bag, the zipper still works and it is still pretty weatherproof. But we feel it should have lasted a lot longer, which is why I knocked off a star for this review. Also, not a fan of the straps and tie downs. We struggled with the black straps that come with it, and ultimately threw them out, along with the included tie downs, and just used good quality tie downs (do yourself a favor, and go buy good tie downs! The ones that come with this are not of good quality, and we did not want to risk it).Installation is kind of a pain. The design is so that the basket needs to be held up from the ground while inserting the pins to get it attached to the hitch. I suggest 2 people install this together. After a few times, we have come up with a system for installing. We hold the basket up with a crate while inserting the pins so we don't have to hold it up ourself. When not in use, this is very space saving. It can just be put up against a wall, or on a wide shelf out of the way. We have not tried the folding mechanism yet, so I cannot review that part. But, overall I would definitely recommend this hitch basket! It is sturdy, and frees up so much space inside your vehicle!

After adding a new baby to the family, we needed an easy way to carry ALL THE BABY STUFF. Enter mockins folding cargo carrier.I didn't want to climb on top my SUV and also wanted something that we could use on our truck if we wanted. I also didn't want a huge hit on our gas mileage.I researched a few different hitch mount carriers before deciding on this one, mainly due to the weatherproof bag and great reviews. We received the carrier a few days before a big trip and easily got it assembled and on the car. When packing, it was easy to load and also still easy to access the back of my SUV.When driving, other than the initial crazy thoughts of - did it fall off 200 miles ago and I didn't know?? - it did great! We drove through rainstorms, construction and traffic with no issues. The bag is really easy to remove so I'd definitely recommend taking it inside with you rather than leaving it attached inside the folded up carrier. When the carrier is folded up, it's closer to your car exhaust which is very very warm. Don't do what I did.Mockins customer service was super helpful when I contacted them with an issue. I'd deal with them again any day! Although I'm pretty sure I won't have to because this carrier is legit.

Half of this item performed well. The hitch rack was great. The bag however did not. The handles ripped and a hole was found in the bottom at the end of our very first trip. It was quite disappointing. The pictures show the torn handle, and the hole in the bags bottom.MOCKINS customer service reached out following my review, quickly replaced my bag, and followed up to help ensure it didnt happen to anyone else in the future. For standing behind the product and quickly replacing the bag, I have upgraded this item to five stars.

The stanchions that support the top rail were assembled incorrectly. The one on the far right and one in the center are in the wrong positions. Holes had to be drilled into the center one to bolt the center plate in place like the rear plate in the top left corner of the photo. Capacity of the shelf would be severely decreased without this plate. I have not tried the rain cover yet. It appears to be made well.

Everything seems sturdy. A few scratches from shipping but no dents. The reflective tape has poor adhesive. The wrenches are trash, they were not even a close fit to the nuts and bolts. Now about the "bag", it is a little disappointing due to its lack of structure. I made a skeleton for mine with 1/2" pvc. Now it looks more like a box, rather than a crumpled bag! Maybe someone with Amazon will buy my plans or I can mass produce the structures for a fee!

We bought the hitch carrier and bag set to use on a cross country road trip. The carrier held up perfectly over 4000 miles! It's easy to assemble and we were about to put all our camping gear in the bag. The bag itself is strong and weatherproof and or things stayed dry as a bone through multiple thunderstorms and rough terrain that we encountered. The zipper is strong but the Velcro strips are poorly attached and most of them ripped completely out in 2-3 yes of opening and closing the bag. I'm docking a star for that.

Another reviewer posted that the weld broke on the tongue; it is poor engineering to place all the load on this weld without a hardware fail safe like a bolt or pin. Never the less the price is really good and there are other benefits all around. Just please do yourself a favor and wrap some trailer safety chains around the basket, preventing a possible major accident to the drivers behind you. I would NOT advise using this carrier by itself and without an even load, but with the included bag it's fantastic and exactly what I needed to prevent playing Tetris in my suv on long trips.

I bought this product for road tripping in our minivan. As you can see, we don't pack light! We additionally optimize the bag by using large vacuum bags (space bags) to pack inside the Mokin bag. With this, we pack for 5 people for 2 weeks of winter (bulky) clothes and need no suit cases or clothes in the van. This leaves room for the passengers to have room for personal items and space to get comfortable and sleep. We used a top mounted cargo container in the past. It just makes noise and hurts the gas mileage. This solution is much better for both. It is quiet and we got 28 MPG on a 1,500 mile run. Further, it is far easier to access this product versus the roof mount. We have taken this product on approximately 10,000 miles. Florida to DC to Wisconsin to Florida both in the winter and in the summer...through snow and rain. Performed well. Picture one is everything out back in the bag and room in the car for a long trip. Picture two is a short distance trip to camping, so there is more gear in the back of the van.Assemble Comment - Assembly was easy; nut and bolts. Did it with my daughter in no time. Only issue, it was easier to put it together upside down on the neck. For some reason the bolt fit better that way, so I assumed it was correct. This caused it to be too low to the ground and scrape. After getting down the road, we realized it needed to be corrected. We stopped flipped it the first rest plaza with basic tools. So, pretty easy to work with. Only issue was having to force the neck pin a little. After that clear sailing.Weatherproof - As I said above, we have run it through 90 in Florida to subzero in Wisconsin through snow and rain. Bag stays dry.Sturdiness - I would say this product is sturdy. The only ding is that it is going to rust eventually if not cared for. We have a minivan. There is not much clearance. Any steep incline is going to cause a scrape on the ground. For example, we scraped leaving the gas station where the slope is down and then qui.
