FAQ

Hitch Carriers FAQ

General Compatibility & Installation

Q: What vehicles are compatible with the hitch cargo carrier?
A: The cargo carrier fits vehicles with a 2" hitch receiver. Always verify that your vehicle’s hitch class and weight capacity support the carrier.

Q: Can the cargo carrier be used with a hitch extender?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch extender is rated for the appropriate weight capacity and does not compromise stability.

Q: Is this hitch carrier approved for use on a 5th wheel?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch receiver meets the required weight capacity. Always double-check your vehicle’s specifications.

Q: Can the hitch carrier be attached to a tow ball?
A: No, it is not designed for tow ball use. It must be connected to a hitch receiver.

Safety & Security

Q: How does the hitch stabilizer & lock system enhance safety?
A: The hitch stabilizer minimizes wobbling and movement, while the hitch lock prevents theft by securing the carrier to the vehicle.

Q: Will dual exhaust pose a fire hazard?
A: The heavy-duty steel withstands high temperatures, but it is recommended to maintain a safe distance from the exhaust to prevent heat exposure.

Q: Does the cargo carrier block the rearview camera?
A: It may partially obstruct visibility depending on your vehicle and the cargo being carried. Always check after installation and adjust if needed.

Q: What is the maximum recommended height for stacking cargo?
A: If stacking above the side rails, use a cargo net or tie-down straps to keep items secure during travel.

Durability & Maintenance

Q: Is the cargo carrier rust-proof?
A: The carrier is made of anti-rust steel with a protective coating. For extended durability, periodically apply a rust-resistant spray and store it indoors when not in use.

Q: Is the carrier weather-resistant?
A: Yes, it has a rust-resistant coating to protect against harsh weather conditions.

Storage & Usage

A: The carrier features a tilting design for compact storage. Follow the user manual for folding instructions.

Q: Can the cargo bag be used on a roof rack?
A: No, the cargo bag is not designed for roof use. High wind speeds and improper installation could cause damage, and roof mounting is not covered under warranty.

Cargo Bag Features & Security

Q: How can I keep my belongings safe and dry in the cargo bag?
A: The waterproof cargo bag has carry handles, zipper pulls, a protective zipper flap, Velcro closures, and buckle straps. It also includes an anti-theft lock for added security.

Texas to Alaska in a 24' RV. Needed extra space so we bought the rack. We had under 250 lbs on it when it started to bend, before we hit California. Had to pull most of what we had on it and cram it into the RV.Very poor Quality. Stay away.

NOT for use on RV. We have had this carrier on our RV for less than 6 months. On the first trip, both tail lights fell off but Mokins was quick to replace them. But now the carrier is drooping on both sides and the welds appear to be failing. It has NOT been overloaded. It was really nice that it could hold six large bins, but we are 73 years old and did not overload them. Combined weight of 100 - 200 lbs max. If we make it home without it falling apart on the Interstate we will be thankful but it can not be used again.

First thing to mention - if you don't need to, or care to install the rear-facing lights on this rack, then I give this product 5 stars. I rated it 4 stars because if you do install the two turn signal/brake lights, you will find that the wiring connector on the back of the light intrudes into the main body of the storage rack and that means that something in the rack could break the wire or plastic plug on the back of the turn signal/brake light. Seethe included pic for details. Now, as to how I like this rack, based on how I intend to use this rack - I like it a lot. I won't or don't plan on installing the two rear lights, I had them in there, then removed them once I realized they could get in my way. I picked this particular rack because of just how complete the kit is. I learned how useful it is to have the large rectangular sack to load your thing in, because without that, anything you put on the rear rack is bound to get dusty and dirty as you drive down the road. So the big sack is a very nice feature indeed. I can also confirm that this rack is built tough. The finish on it is not a thin layer of paint so I expect this not to rust any time soon.Assembly wasn't difficult at all. You will want to have a metric socket set or some wrenches available. A large flat head screwdriver is also needed unless you elect to use your own bolts in place of the ones they provide with a slotted head. I mention it because in hindsight, that's what I should have done. I probably spent about 30 minutes putting it all together. The provided instructions are adequate. The pics aren't the best but the only advice I have is that right at the start you have to be sure you know which side of the basket faces the car, and which faces the rear. You can identify the rear-facing side as the side that has these oval/rectangles that the turn signal lights mount into.

Some (more than you think) assembly required. This is not an instant pop it on your car and load her up. The tray comes in two halves which you mount onto a center shaft which then connects to the pivoting hitch. All bells and whistles (license plate holder, lights, wiring, reflective stickers) are also installed by you. The instructions are full of pictures and are very clearly written even if the pictures are sometimes too dark to really see what you need to. It does forget to tell you where to put the reflective stickers. I also walked into this assembly thinking that I could take it all apart afterwards and put it back in the box for storage. Haha no, that is not happening. This thing is staying together after all that assembly - especially after wiring the electrics.Note on the wiring if you do get this: I would feed your main trailer wire down the center shaft BEFORE you put the tray sides on. Getting it past all the bolts was a major pain later. Connecting the wires was fairly simple though note, you will need something to strip the wires to expose the raw ends. Not sure if the screws I was sent for the license plate holder were correct. They seem too long and have a nut that stops at the top instead of further down. This means that The are too loose to really hold the plate on tightly.Lights are not anchored onto the frame. One stays put mostly with the rubber border, but the other one easily pops out. Will have to figure out a way to anchor them better. Wiring sorta holds it in place, but I don't trust it not to pop up after hitting a bump just right. My biggest concern with this tray is that when you fold it upright, it doesn't stand upright but rather leans towards your car. In my case, the hitch tray rests on my license plate frame and any wobble moves the entire trunk exterior panel of my car. No bueno. I would need to find some way of padding this, but even then, I don't like the idea of my car panel flexing that much. I trust this tray in the down posi.

Despite the delay in receiving it, it was finally received. The quality is good, the size is what I'm happy with, and it works well, recommended!

Received this yesterday and started to put together today. There was no damage on the package, however, you can see in the photos, one of the name plates are all scratched up and one side support is bent as though it had been dropped. This is a utility item, blemishes don't tear me up, they will happen. When purchased new, however, I would like to be the one that does the damage 1st. Especially at this price. We are getting ready for a 14 day road trip so I am hoping the reviews of how good it is are true. I'm also hoping the damage won't make it structurally unsound. I will update after our trip.UPDATE: It made it our entire 3500 mile trip. By then end of the trip we were really getting concerned that this was not going to make it. It was really leaning to the side as well as to the back (away from the vehicle). It was so low, it would drag the ground if we had gone up a sharp driveway. If we had to do it again, we would not have purchased this from Mockins. We tried to contact the company when we 1st got this, both directly and thru amazon and didn't get a response what so ever. Really disappointing the lack of customer service. Yes, we realized, we should have sent this back or ordered earlier. We weren't expecting to need extra cargo space and we were really hoping it would last the trip we had planned. It did, barely.

Many people have commented on the bolts snapping. When I first installed my unit, I noted it was sagged as soon as loaded some weight.I added a shim where the basket folds down to raise/level the basket out and noted that I was able to slide the bolts/pins out much more easily. Thus, I believe the bolts are not there to actually support weight but instead keep the basket from raising up.Either way, just for safety I did upgrade the hardware to Grade 8 pins. With those fixes, the basket survived a 4900 mile road trip through some VERY rough roads in northern Mexico.I have only positive things to say about the vinyl luggage bag. It literally doubles the amount you can bring and worked flawlessly during muddy roads and rain. Heavy duty vinyl. Its somewhat heavy and difficult to fold it to fit in its little bag, but ill gladly take heavy duty vinyl any day.In short, its a great unit if you are willing to shim and upgrade the bolts.

We upgraded to a 2024 Expedition Max so that my daughter, son-in-law and two grand kids could ride with us for family vacation. We knew we couldn't get all the luggage in the back of the Max. Took a chance on this cargo hauler and it did not disappoint. Drove 14 hours to Santa Rosa Beach, FL through bad weather. All luggage was dry and kept secure. The cover was great and we had room for more luggage if we would have needed it. Could not be happier with this investment. Didn't even know it was back there. Smooth ride and no problems at all. Highly recommend this product and company. Very sturdy and well made. Everything you need is included.

This cargo carrier is HEAVY duty. It works well and it is a smart design with both lighting and clever license plate carrier. It is sturdy, holds a lot of weight, and thanks to the clever design doesn't wiggle or move about. Assembly is a bit of a bear and it's not perfect. Let's get into it.First off the entire thing was packaged well. Even though there was no visible damage to the shipping one part arrive bent. Not enough to worry about but it required a bit of muscle to make right. The second issue was the included quick connect for the wiring harness didn't work as expected. I resorted to soldering the wiring harness and shrink wrapping the connections. Finally the lights themselves work fine, but the are a friction fit into their spot on the carrier. There is not nearly enough friction to hold them in correctly (This is why it's 4 stars). I'm still playing with options to make this perfect - so far a bead of silicone around the end is OK but after a trip one light came 1/2 way out of it's socket!Overall - assembly is straight forward. Lay the parts out and pay attention to orientation. The only "tricky" part is running the wiring hardness from the front to the back and wiring in the lights to the harness. I ran a yard stick through the center channel and used painters tape to attach the primary wiring harness. This made easy work of that job and based on other reviews that tip alone will save you a lot of grief. The quick connector just didn't work and the light wires were just barely long enough. After messing with it for way to long I just hand soldered and sealed the lights to the harness. This works perfectly.I REALLY like the fact that it has lights that work with your vehicle. Even if you are carrying something that might obscure your regular taillights, you'll still have clear and bright taillights, turn signal, and brake lights. The other nice feature is the clever license place holder. It allows your plate to be properly displayed when the carrier is.

This is one heavy duty (and very heavy) trailer, it is such a nice addition to my SUV. I live out in the country and taking my trash to the dump was not an easy process before now. I did not like the assembly process, the directions showed an all black trailer (illustration) and it was difficult to see what it was showing. I struggled for days trying to figure out how to put the arm onto the trailer. I had to research about 5 different videos just to figutre it out (the instructions are not super clear). I also could not understand how to hook up the included trailer lights either, I did not install these as the lights on my car are visible when driving. It is sturdy when installed, however, it is important to distribute weight correctly to avoid warping the metal. It is difficult for 1 person to put on, it is really heavy and awkward, I had my son help me put it on. Once on it is fairly easy to lower and raise the trailer. This has a LOT of cargo space, I did not use the travel bag included but did note it was VERY thick vinyl that would not tear or puncture. The drive with the trailer was nice, using the anti vibration collar helps the noise on the hitch a lot. Overall this is a very nice cargo trailer and would recommend anyone to purchase this brand.

So, this carrier is basically for the back of a travel trailer (RV) but will technically work on anything with a hitch. It was easy to assemble, but the lights do have a bit of wiring involved. Speaking of the lights, they are the reason for a star deduction. And unless I missed something, their is no way to secure them in place, or at least anyway I'm comfortable with. So you may have to secure them your own way. The quality is very good and the storage bag is very large and made of a very thick material. A+ on the storage trunk. B+ on the carrier and a D on the lights. I was able to assemble and install it on the back of my Ford 500 with no help, just me. It's pricey, but you get a lot.. even a locking hitch pin, a combination lock for the trunk storage, a hitch lock down. And more. 2-inch hitch receiver only, though. Unless you have the adapter.

It arrived ahead of schedule. Packing was great. I purchased a can of rubber spray to help with NY salt is all it needs. Cannot beat the quality.
