The rack bent down lower and lower to the ground on our very first road trip with just over 100lbs on it. The rack doesn't line up anymore when you tilt it up. Mockins said they were sending me a replacement when I showed them the pictures but then sent me a random item without cotter pins. Boo!
I just received this product and opened the box. The attached picture is the product prior to assembly. Boy, am I impressed. This item is well built and made with strong materials. I am no welder, but the welds look great because they are clean. The underlying materials are of heavy gauge material. I think I got a great deal compared to a local welder who wanted 5 times the price I paid. The bag is thick.
Updates to 3 stars from 2.When a box with holes arrived on my doorstep I knew something would be missing. The stabilizer bar was not sent with my purchase and it was missing one of the m16 pin clips sets the hitch stabilizer bar and the main frame arm (the part that connects to your hitch). I will contact their customer service.Customer service got back to me quickly and sent the items I needed. Had to wait an extra week. However upon further inspection the powder coat was damaged on many pieces and the frame was dented in certain corners. After assembly found that the main bolt which connects the basket to the swing arm is not long enough so the bolt doesn't make it entirely through the nut on the other side. I may replace that piece myself for piece of mind.Haven't given a road test yet. But it feels pretty stable, all things considered.This isn't a small item so the hassle of trying to return it isn't worth it because the boxes would all have to be replaced on my dime. I just wish whomever shipped it had gotten it right the first time. If it isn't first quality don't send it back out.I am not an expert or professional. I'm just a guy who wants quality for his money.
This cargo carrier has proven incredibly useful for our frequent four-hour drives to visit a family member. We've consistently packed it full with a variety of travel essentials, including clothing bags, air mattresses, children's toys, and even a dog cage. The included cover provides excellent peace of mind, ensuring our belongings are protected from weather damage.While the bag lock isn't particularly robust, it should serve as a basic deterrent against casual theft at rest stops. The hitch lock, though aesthetically pleasing, has unfortunately shown signs of rust after only two months of winter use.Regarding weight capacity, I tested the carrier with approximately 480 pounds of wood pellet bags, and noticed the basket beginning to bend. Based on this, I'd recommend staying closer to 400 pounds, rather than the advertised 500 pounds, to ensure long-term integrity.Overall, this is a very effective cargo carrier. It was relatively easy to assemble and install, and has significantly simplified our long-distance travels
I finally decided to purchase this particular cargo carrier after I shopped for 4 days from anyone that I could locate that sold them. It was so easy to install that my friend and I installed it in less than an hour after dark by flashlight. I really like this cargo carrier as it looks good, is very heavy duty, sturdy, and quite large. It shipped immediately and arrived in 2 days. It was a great price from Amazon and has a 10 year warranty.
This thing is a beast! The first thing you'll notice when you get the box is that it's significantly heavy. All the pieces seem well crafted and the powder coating was excellent. The pieces lined up well and all the hardware was a good quality with no burrs or thread issues on the nuts and bolts themselves.Once assembled it is very large with a ton of space. It does stick out a good bit behind the vehicle so there will be a fair amount of torque if you load it to capacity. It's best to have heavy duty shocks/springs in the back so your front end won't ride up too high. I was also a bit concerned about curb clearance etc especially if there this a break in angle that would cause it to bottom out but so far haven't had any trouble.Pay close attention to the orientation of the bed pieces if you want to get the assembly lined up for the license plate holder. Those directions are on a separate sheet to be completed after the initial assembly. It is VERY easy to end up with it assembled with the mounting holes "backwards" (facing the wrong direction)... don't ask me how I know!One nice feature is that it will fold up when not in use. This permits you to fold it up out of the way once emptied, allowing you to park an SUV in a space that is about four feet shorter than when it's deployed.Taking it on-and-off is not too difficult but will require you to take off the stabilizer bolt (so a wrench will be needed). Personally, I found it easier to slide it into the tongue if I had it in the 'folded upright' position. It is a bit awkward and bulky but manageable to do by yourself. Having help makes it a snap.**I have an older vehicle but I would assume this could be a bit problematic for a backup camera.**Over all I'm quite content with this item and anticipate using it to carry things to the beach on an upcoming trip in April.
The Mockins cargo rack is really big. I didn't realize until I put it together just how big it would be. The design is clever, and it seems sturdy enough for anything that I would want to carry. It does have some looseness where the tube attaches to the rack. When the rack is folded up, the wobbling is more noticeable. This is where the basket of the rack attaches to the hitch tube. I will put a bungee on it to see if I can mitigate the wobble. It's nice that it comes with a hitch stabilizer for the hitch tube when it's in the truck hitch receiver. That can be snugged up to prevent sway and wobble. I can see how nice it will be during camping season or while traveling. It's also long enough to haul a delta or tadpole trike is the wheels are too far apart.
This is heavy duty for sure. It took about 30 minutes to put together and you have to watch where the license plater holder goes. They should include a warning to draw attention to that in the manual. Overall thats my only complaint. The whole unit is solid and folds up on a full size hitch. It comes with a box/bag that fits in it and has tie downs. It has a lock for the hitch and a rocker for where the hitch and the unit meet. This is a simple $10 part that is amazing. It keeps the whole thing from rotating and rocking left to right. Overall this an excellent kit and I can absolutely recommend it from just the short time I have had it.
The size is listed on the product title, but it fails to convey how big this rack is. As I was assembling it, I commented that I could use it to pick up a washer and dryer. I then immediately turned the page in the instruction book and saw an image of someone using this to transport a washer and dryer. Due to the size, it would be much more difficult for anyone small statured to mount onto a vehicle, although in no way impossible. It is quite heavy, and the dimensions make it challenging to hold and lift. When assembling, be sure to identify which half of the basket has to license plate holder holes pre-drilled, and don't install it backwards like I did. Other than that, which was 100% user error, assembly instruction are easy to follow and total build time should be less than an hour, depending on your experience. This rack comes with a locking hitch bolt, a weatherproof cover for whatever you're hauling, and 4 ratchet straps to keep everything tight. *Slaps the cargo* "That ain't going anywhere." - every guy ever strapping down cargo
NOTE:The two halves look identical and will bolt up either way. There is a minor difference that can cost you a lot of time. The tag mount screw holes. Be sure they are on the left rear.I unpacked and assembled this on a smooth piece of plywood. None of the scuffs should have been caused by that. If they were it should give you an idea of the durability of the coating.The end cap wasn't seated. I tried coating it with dish liquid and hitting it with a rubber mallet but it is too distorted to seat. I'll have to remove it first to find out whether it just needs cleaning up, as in trimming, or if it is the tube that is the problem.I don't like bolt heads not having a washer. They tend to chew if/when they turn. I had to supply my own.When I got ready to install the folding hitch piece I tested function before bolting on and it had me a bit confused as it didn't seem to want to fold properly. I tried with just the bolt in both the up and down position. Starting from the up position it seemed okay so I bolted it on and inserted the pin. Then I tried folding it down but it was hanging up and wouldn't fold down. Only after almost completely removing the nut did it function properly. On further inspection I discovered that it is hanging on the welds. I'll have to grind them down a bit before I can use it. If absolutely necessary it could be used in the "in use" position without it.Keep an eye on the rail ends when bolting the sides together. Mine were offset on completion and I had to loosen the bolts to line them up.The reflector adhesive isn't great. I doubt they will stay on long term. Be sure the surface is clean and smooth before applying.Something to keep in mind is that this carrier is fairly heavy on it's own and with the distance it stands out to the rear could effect your ride quality depending on your application. With a full load it most likely will. Try to load the heaviest items to the front closest to your vehicle.This could be a great product. Quality contr.
At nearly six feet in width, the only thing this is missing is a provision for taillights. Depending on the load and the vehicle the lights may very well be obscured. Adding an inexpensive set of trailer lights would be easy. I can recommend their Mockins weatherproof cargo bags as well that would work perfectly on this cargo carrier, particularly in the winter and spring. Assembly was easy, the hardware is still metric 4.8 grade budget stuff and some of the flat washers provided were neither round nor flat. There is room for improvement in the hardware department. Otherwise, this will serve for quite a while but could use a few minor upgrades.
I go off road and had this carrier packed! It performed well.Even through the dips in the road...But when the dips were too big we just strapped it up to the crossbars.It did hit at times, but wow is it strong!Good buy.

I was looking for a hitch mount cargo carrier for an upcoming camping trip and came across this package deal. After reading reviews and comparing different carriers I settled on this one. It came with the cargo carrier, a bungee cargo net with clips and the stabilizer bracket. It was so easy to put together. I highly recommend this package since it includes the stabilizer bracket which is definitely needed. Without it the carrier is somewhat loose in the receiver hitch which would cause unwanted movement and noise when in transit. With the stabilizer in place there is absolutely no movement whatsoever. The bungee cargo net clips have a rounded hook eye which are slightly hard to get over the square frame rail but still work great. As an added bonus I also bought the rainproof Cargo carrier Bag not included in this package.This worked great for hauling extra items for our camping trip and I am totally happy with the purchase.I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier!!!!
