Hitch Carriers FAQ

General Compatibility & Installation

Q: What vehicles are compatible with the hitch cargo carrier?
A: The cargo carrier fits vehicles with a 2" hitch receiver. Always verify that your vehicle’s hitch class and weight capacity support the carrier.

Q: Can the cargo carrier be used with a hitch extender?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch extender is rated for the appropriate weight capacity and does not compromise stability.

Q: Is this hitch carrier approved for use on a 5th wheel?
A: Yes, as long as the hitch receiver meets the required weight capacity. Always double-check your vehicle’s specifications.

Q: Can the hitch carrier be attached to a tow ball?
A: No, it is not designed for tow ball use. It must be connected to a hitch receiver.

Safety & Security

Q: How does the hitch stabilizer & lock system enhance safety?
A: The hitch stabilizer minimizes wobbling and movement, while the hitch lock prevents theft by securing the carrier to the vehicle.

Q: Will dual exhaust pose a fire hazard?
A: The heavy-duty steel withstands high temperatures, but it is recommended to maintain a safe distance from the exhaust to prevent heat exposure.

Q: Does the cargo carrier block the rearview camera?
A: It may partially obstruct visibility depending on your vehicle and the cargo being carried. Always check after installation and adjust if needed.

Q: What is the maximum recommended height for stacking cargo?
A: If stacking above the side rails, use a cargo net or tie-down straps to keep items secure during travel.

Durability & Maintenance

Q: Is the cargo carrier rust-proof?
A: The carrier is made of anti-rust steel with a protective coating. For extended durability, periodically apply a rust-resistant spray and store it indoors when not in use.

Q: Is the carrier weather-resistant?

A: No, the cargo bag is not designed for roof use. High wind speeds and improper installation could cause damage, and roof mounting is not covered under warranty.

Cargo Bag Features & Security

Q: How can I keep my belongings safe and dry in the cargo bag?
A: The waterproof cargo bag has carry handles, zipper pulls, a protective zipper flap, Velcro closures, and buckle straps. It also includes an anti-theft lock for added security.

This product is very well made! The material is thick and pliable and the zipper is robust and works smoothly. Very good investment. Will last a long time!

This is way more room than we expected. I do like that there is an included mat to protect the top of the vehicle. This prevents dents and scratches on the top of the vehicle. The bag is made of a material that looks and feels tough. We have not taken this on a trip yet so I am not able to verify how tough the bag is. It came with everything needed to secure the bag to the roof of the car. The hardware to secure the bag seems on par with most ratchet straps and things I own. The zipper has a weather resistant/proof flap to prevent water from getting in the bag while traveling. I am not sure if I would fill this thing to place on the roof of any vehicle. We placed a cooler, two camping chairs, two queen sized deep mattresses, and three tents and that did not even cover the bottom of this travel bag. It has a lot of space but durability is still up for trial.

I've had no issues with it at all, but I'm using it a bit differently, in the back of my pickup until I get one of those drawer systems, so it's not exposed to the high winds on the roof. It feels like pretty good quality though. No issues yet with water getting into it. Lots of room in it, nearly fills up my mid size truck bed.

Absolutely worked great for what I needed. Wish it would've came a little quicker, but worth the weight

This rooftop cargo bag has a good amount of storage capacity. We got this on top of my 2011 Toyota Sequoia for our paddle board gear and luggage on longer trips. We haven't taken it out on the road yet but our gear fits well. It seems well made and comes with all the straps needed to secure it. It fits well on top of my car. The fabric is durable so it's weather proof and the zippers are strong. It should keep water out but we wouldn't have anything in it that would be ruined by any leaks.

This was a great product. I drove from North Carolina to Dallas. Hold up really good!!

Heavy duty material. Lasted the whole trip. Straps were secure and held well. Extra straps good too. Durable velcro and zipper. Alot of room. Great value . Kind of heavy to lift on top of my SUV but doable.

Did not work for me. I thought it would be more like a box. And the hooks would not fit on my car.

Buyer beware! First time we used this carrier bag it began to disintegrate. After reaching out campsite, we noticed areas worn completely thru and one of the orange circles that holds the strap was pulling off. I have contacted Mockins for a refund . Will update after I hear back from then. In the meantime I will need to go buy a hard shell carrier and have it installed in order to get back home. Really put a crimp in my vacation plans.

I got one of these for my son to haul all his stuff to college with, because he was looking for a hard-sided rooftop carrier for his Outback wagon, but was unable to find one at a price he could swing. This was among the biggest bags we considered, and I got it for him since he was really worried about having enough room. We loaded him up and sent him on his way this morning, and having done so, I've realized that I should've gotten him a smaller one! At 45 cubic feet, this thing is cavernous. We just didn't have enough to fill it, so we ended up having to fold the rear end of the bag under and strap it down good and tight, otherwise all that empty space would've just been flapping in the wind. The bag feels like it's made of a tough material and coated with a waterproof layer, and the zipper has a fold-down cover to prevent water intrusion. Being soft-sided, it is most suitable for bulky items like clothes, blankets, etc. You wouldn't want to put anything solid or breakable in it. My son tells me, though, that so far it is staying in place just fine, even through interstate travel, so it must be handling the wind well. The set also includes a rooftop pad, many straps, ratchets, tie-downs, hooks, trunk-lid anchors, a lock, and a carrying bag for it all.For the amount of storage space in it and included accessories, at $140, this bag is a fantastic value. I could see cramming in a whole family's worth of blankets, clothes, and the like for a move. However, as a soft-sided carrier, it is of course only suitable for occasional use. Unlike a hard carrier, you can't leave something like this on your car when you're not using it, and fabric/rubber will eventually break down with age. Also, though a lock is included, it wouldn't be that difficult to just cut the bag, so also unlike a hard carrier, it isn't the most secure cargo carrying solution.Still, I can't argue with the value. This bag will carry a LOT of cargo at a reasonable price, and includes just about everything.

I picked this up thinking I would be able to use this as a roof unit on a Jeep JKU Wrangler with a removable top but quickly realized that the attachment straps are not really suited for the top. The rear doors would require the unit to be attached by the door frame straps connected to the hard lip but there is no lip. Once attached and tightened it seems it would prohibit the door from closing and in the front something would need to be wrapped around the roll bar with the same downside.Sadly back to square one. This is no fault of the unit, simply a mismatch with the vehicle.

"This review is for Mockins 45 Cu.Ft. XL Waterproof Rooftop Cargo Bag | 75""x48""x22"" Heavy Duty Rooftop Cargo Carrier for Use with or w/o Roof Rack | Car Roof Bag Set Includes Top of Car Storage Mat, Lock, Hooks & StrapsWith all the weather patterns, it's a good idea to have a bug out bag - this is a bag where you can keep a supply of emergency food, clothes, etc that allow you to survive comfortably if you need to bug out of your house. With the wildfires we had in the northeast, we didn't want to take any chances, especially with people constantly shooting fireworks around here. When it gets too dry, I make sure we have stuff packed for us and for our cats. That way, if we really need to bug out, we can do so quickly. I'd highly recommend this for everyone. It's easy enough to bug out to save your life; it's another thing completely to have to survive in hotels for weeks on end. Which would you rather do?NOTE: As an Amazon Vine reviewer, I receive this product without paying for it directly; however, I have to claim the full value of this product on my taxes as this counts as a taxable gift and I must pay taxes for the taxable value of this item."

BEWARE! DO NOT BUY!Set this up on top of my car for a trip, with all my family's luggage inside. Within only a couple hours of driving, there was strange noise happening, so we pulled over and checked the carrier, which was already ripping! Thank God we checked because we probably would have lost all of our luggage and destroyed our car!

I bought this cargo bag for a long road trip and was really impressed with how much it could hold. The 45 cubic feet of space easily fit all my camping gear, and the materials felt tough and weatherproof - I didn't have to worry about rain or dust getting inside. The included straps, hooks, and even the lock made securing the bag super simple, and I appreciated the protective mat that kept my car roof scratch-free.Packing it away when not in use is convenient since it folds into the carry case, which saves space. The waterproof zippers and reinforced seams really add confidence for driving in bad weather. Overall, it's a solid, roomy, and well-thought-out rooftop carrier for anyone who travels often or needs extra cargo space without a permanent roof rack.

I was really pleased to order this Mockins 45 Cu.Ft. XL Waterproof Rooftop Cargo Bag. I live in an area that has to be evacuated due to natural disasters sometimes annually, which is highly stressful. I don't have a truck or RV, which makes that worse, because my small sedan does not fit anywhere near the percentage of things I want to be able to salvage from my home, nor enough to live off of for a month or so which can be the amount of evacuation time in a serious emergency. So having a huge rainproof container I can attach securely to the external of the car is a big help. It's rather awkward to handle, so not easy for one small person. I need to set up a ladder to attach, and then pack neatly. I also personally would never trust only 1 layer with important items - so I would only pack items that were already in their own waterproof sealed bags/containers, as an extra layer of safety. This is also a great thing to have around if I need to buy things at a store that won't fit in my car - although a hassle to set up for just a short trip, especially if without help. The absolute most important aspect, is the ability to have it attach securely and never move or fall off/break open on the road, which could hit another car. So I really appreciate the ratcheting straps (which are also great to have around for other purposes when not in use on the car). This seems durable, and able to withstand the elements. But I'll try to come back to update if I notice issues in future. One thing that is essential to know: this WILL substantially lower your car's MPG, and especially for an emergency where there may be fuel shortages, that can be a concern. I have a hybrid vehicle also, so that's a problem because it is not that powerful and this creates substantial drag. But my vehicle is not really designed for a trailer either, so this is the best compromise I can come up with currently.I gave 4 stars, in part because this design should have been made aerodynamic, which it is not i.

I got this cargo bag for a family road trip, and it was perfect for fitting all our gear without crowding the car. It's huge and swallowed up multiple duffel bags, a tent, and even some sleeping bags with room to spare. The material feels really tough, and we went through some rain, but everything inside stayed completely dry. I was especially glad it came with all the straps and a protective mat so I didn't have to go out and get extra stuff. It was super easy to get on the roof, even without a roof rack, and knowing everything was secure made the drive so much less stressful.

Overall asset when you have limited space to pack all your belongings on the interior of your vehicle. It can also be used in between traveling to keep some of your things stored securely. I picked this up in anticipation of having to empty out my belongings from the storage unit I had kept them in for the past year. I was renting a truck for the large items but using my mid size suv for transporting my valuable and precious items. I knew I wasn't going to be able to fit everything inside so I was hoping this would be a solution that I could get up onto the roof and tied down securely to make the 210 mile trip. I chose this one because it reported to be made of super thick vinyl material with reinforced seams and had heavy duty covered zippers that would make the bag waterproof. Having everything included the get it secured down to the roof rack makes this a really good value. And the straps aren't the cheap almost useless ones!I've had three other roof top cargo carriers and this is by far superior to those. My only problem was that with my being just 5'1- tall and a senior, even at just 15lbs I found that it was very challenging to get it up onto the top of the roof and situated all by myself. I did bounce back and forth between posting four or five stars🤔 I recognize that my situation is probably unusual; if I had help I wouldn't hesitate giving this 5 stars and my 👍👍 and a very high recommendation! After seeing it was predicted to rain during the time period I would be driving home, I switched up what I had originally thought I would put into the carrier. On the off chance that it didn't keep my things dry I put in linens, clothing, dishes, pots and pans along with other items that could easily be dried. No worries, the carrier is indeed waterproof which was a huge relief because I put in new queen and king size comforters that would have taken forever to dry🤣 It was surprising at how big this carrier is and the amount that I was able to put in it.The drive.

Used this for a week-long camping trip and it absolutely delivered. It's huge-fit all our gear that didn't need to be in the car. Install was easy even without a roof rack thanks to the included hooks and nonslip mat. Stayed put at highway speeds and nothing got wet, even in a solid downpour. Zippers are beefy, material feels thick, and it folds up tight when you're done. Honestly one of the best soft rooftop bags I've used.

The Mockins 45 Cu.Ft. XL Rooftop Cargo Bag is the real deal for families, overpackers, or anyone prepping for a big trip-or even a worst-case scenario. It's huge, durable, and truly waterproof. I've used it on both road trips and as backup storage in my garage, and it holds a surprising amount: sleeping bags, crates, odd-shaped gear-no problem. You don't need a roof rack, which is a big plus. The included non-slip mat, straps, hooks, and even a lock make this a full kit, not just a bag. Everything stayed dry through heavy rain, and it didn't shift at all on the roof. When not in use, it folds down surprisingly compact for how large it is when expanded. If you need extra space, this bag delivers without adding stress. Solid build, well thought-out, and a smart buy.

I ordered this rooftop cargo bag for my daughter to use on her Jeep Compass when she travels for military duty. The bag is huge at 75 x 48 x 22 inches with 45 cubic feet of space. Quality is excellent - heavy-duty vinyl material with welded seams and waterproof zippers under protective flaps. The kit includes everything needed - ratchet straps, door hooks, a protective mat for the roof, and even a lock. Setup was straightforward on the Compass without a roof rack using the door hooks. The bag stays secure at highway speeds and kept everything dry through rain. When not in use, it all packs into the included storage bag. Perfect for her long drives between bases with all her gear.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:I decided on this cargo bag instead of others on the market because this one was larger. We liked that it came with its own gear to secure all of our items, and it worked great. With summer being here, our kids are home and we have been traveling more with them. We recently packed for the mountains. We needed more space to store our belongings since our family of 5 really enjoys going on adventures. We were able to put all of our sleeping bags in there and our portable grill. We used it once when it was raining, and all of our items were dry! It feels very durable, it is made of good quality materials, and it fits a lot of items. We were very happy with this heavy-duty rooftop cargo carrier.

When I opened the box and took out the carrier I knew right away this is an item that will do everything I need and will do it in style and safety. Ample cargo space and s great value for the investment. Very easy to put up and very durable. While not necessary roof racks will help the installation go easier and quicker. The package contains a blanket to protect the roof of your vehicle so the paint will be protected. Besides all this the roof storage looks great on top of the vehicle and will give all the room inside the vehicle back to the occupants.
